Windchill
With the temperatures falling and the increased presence of windy conditions. It is time to start thinking about the windchill. Most people are familiar with the windchill and know basically what it means. When it is windy outside the human body loses heat faster than it would in the same temperature if it was not windy. This is because the human body warms a very thin layer of air around it and that layer of air actually helps to isulate the person. If the wind is blowing that layer of air is blown away and must be replaced by the heatsource. This constant warming of the air acts to suck the heat away from the person. If the person is wet, this effect is magnified, because water conducts heat away from the person better than air. This effect is known as the windchill, and using some basic science a hard number can be calculated. The windchill is an interesting weather variable because it has no meteorological effect, it was derived soley for the purpose of human inplications. In other words, you can't use windchill to forecast any of the other weather variables (Pressure, Temperature, Wind, etc). Because of the arbitrary number associated with the windchill some people have debated whether or not we should even use windchill. The windchill is an important parameter to be aware of, knowing the windchill can help you be more prepared for cold related injuries such as frostbite. Below I have added a windchill calculator for a quick reference, when looking at the forecast so you can have an idea of how cold the windchill will be outside. Compare your value to the windchill table below to see what range that temperature falls in. can set in.
